New Communication Skills Workshop for Sarcoma Healthcare Professionals

At Sock it to Sarcoma!, we’re always looking for ways to improve care and support for people affected by sarcoma. That’s why we’re excited to share a new training opportunity.

Our new inititive that we are sponsoring is a specialized communication skills workshop for health professionals working with people who have been diagnosed with sarcoma and their carers. This workshop aims to equip healthcare providers with the tools and techniques needed to navigate difficult conversations and provide compassionate, effective support throughout the sarcoma journey.

Workshop Highlights:

  1. Expert-Led Training: The program is facilitated by Ms Debra York, a clinical psychologist and accredited communications skills trainer, and A/Prof Georgia Halkett, bringing a wealth of experience in radiation therapy.
  2. Evidence-Based Approach: All content is backed by extensive research and practical application, ensuring you receive the most up-to-date and effective strategies.
  3. Hands-On Learning: Engage in real-life scenarios with skilled actors, simulating authentic patient interactions to build your confidence and skills.
  4. Comprehensive Curriculum: The workshop covers crucial areas including:
    • Understanding the unique challenges faced by sarcoma patients and caregivers
    • Recognizing and responding to emotional cues related to anxiety, distress, anger, and depression
    • Developing strategies to support patients throughout their sarcoma journey
    • Enhancing overall communication skills
  5. Personalized Growth: Receive tailored feedback and follow-up online workshops to continue your professional development.

Why It Matters:

Effective communication is at the heart of quality healthcare. For people diagnosed with sarcoma and their families, clear, empathetic, and informed communication from their healthcare team can make a world of difference. This workshop offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to refine these critical skills, ultimately leading to better outcomes and experiences for those affected by sarcoma.

We encourage all healthcare professionals working in the sarcoma field to consider this valuable training opportunity. By enhancing your communication skills, you’ll be better equipped to provide the support and care that people impacted by sarcoma truly need.

This course is making its debut at the International Society of Limb Salvage in Brisbane, October 2024. If you are interested in more information about the course or opportunities in attending a workshop, please contact Associate Professor Georgia Halkett.
